India’s first female gold medalist wrestler, Geeta Phogat has been the role model for young girls since ages. She gave another reason to follow her footsteps as she spoke on a sensitive topic a day before the World Population Day 2017, an annual event celebrated on July 11. Geeta Phogat pledged of not having more than two children as part of a campaign for the two-child policy in the country. Her husband, also an international wrestler, Pawan Singh was sitting in the audience when the Commonwealth 2010 gold medal winner took the oath. World Population Day is observed every year on July 11 to spread awareness on the issues related to global population. We are standing at 7.6 billion on the planet, and it is high time, the world found solutions to curb the problems due to overpopulation. Geeta Phogat, eldest among five daughters of Dronacharya awardee Mahabir Singh Phogat was present at an event supporting the campaign has been initiated by Taxpayers’ Association of Bharat (TAXAB). It is a group that wants every state in the country to execute the two-child policy so that the resources and taxpayers’ money can be utilised properly.

Olympics medal winning celebrated wrestler, Yogeshwar Dutt who was also present at the event to extend his support to the campaign. The famous sports athlete said that over 36 crore people in India live below poverty line and that the increasing population is the country’s biggest problem. “There are queues everywhere. We have to be concerned about our nation and support this movement so that it takes the shape of a law someday,” he said.
